# Tree adoption app in Mannheim

## News: Mannheim residents can now adopt the trees outside their door

MANNHEIM. A new app called "Baumpatenschaft Mannheim" lets people in the city center adopt a street tree and report when they have watered it. The app shows a map of the inner city with trees marked by status: available, adopted, or in need of water. Trees that have not been watered for a long time are highlighted in orange.

Residents can open a tree, see its species, location, weekly water need and a log of past waterings. With two taps they can take over the adoption, and after watering they report how many liters they gave. The tree turns green again on the map, and neighbors can see that it has been cared for.

The idea came up during a startup event in Mannheim. The team behind it says dry summers put young street trees under stress, and many neighbors would like to help but do not know who has already watered. The app does not require a login, and adoption is free and without obligation.

Not everyone is convinced. Some residents ask who pays for the water and whether volunteers are liable if a tree dies. Older people without smartphones worry about being left out. Shop owners in the city center see a chance to look after the tree in front of their store, while some climate activists argue that the city, not volunteers, should be responsible for its trees. The city's parks department has not commented yet.
